For more than 20 years, the A.C.T. Young Conservatory has provided young people and parents guidance navigating the difficult journey of finding and applying/auditioning for college and/or conservatory acting and musical theater training. Special links with programs throughout the country and an impressive list of YC graduates in all of the top programs make our A.C.T. students the best-qualified and most-sought-after for admission. Today’s college drama field is extremely competitive, saturated with many different options open to young adults looking to continue their journey as artists. High school counselors often are at a loss as to how to advise students interested in arts training beyond high school. Where can a young person go to find answers and help in preparing for the next step?
A.C.T.’s College Prep course helps young people sort through the abundant possibilities, clarifies those that best suit each student, and prepares them for the rigors of the audition and admission process. A.C.T. College Prep 2017, offered in two parts, follows the timeline for upcoming applications and auditions for schools throughout the country.
September 30 – November 18, 2017
A.C.T. College Prep Part One offers an overview of programs around the United States, those found in a liberal arts environment, leading to a bachelor’s degree as well as those with more performance-oriented curricula, leading to a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts degree. Part One focuses on self-assessment, application requirements and identifying suitable degree programs. Culling of appropriate audition selections and materials are explored, interview and audition preparation is examined, and assistance in writing the school essay is provided.
December 2, 2017 – February 3, 2018
The focus in this section of the course is on individual coaching for the audition required for competitive programs. Rather than meeting each Saturday, students will sign up for three individual coaching sessions with their assigned personal coach. Coaching will include assistance in final selection of material making up the actor’s presentation package, (both musicals and/or straight plays), audition techniques, and headshot and résumé guidance– everything needed to be prepared for the competitive audition, right down to the appropriate wardrobe. Senior A.C.T. artistic staff and bay area professional theatre practitioners will make up the coaching staff. The course culminates in early February, when national auditions are conducted.
Part Two takes place during the Winter 2017 Session. Enrolment will open in the fall of 2017.
