Furious over her family's dysfunctionality and disrespect, Emma (Nicole Lowrance) runs behind the dilapidated family farmhouse to rage and vent in A.C.T.'s production of Sam Shepard's Curse of the Starving Class.

Young Emma (Nicole Lowrance, right) is seething after being bucked by the family horse in an ill-starred attempt to run away while her mother, Ella (Pamela Reed, left), bemusedly stands by.

Cynical young Emma (Nicole Lowrance) confronts Taylor (Dan Hiatt), a shifty lawyer who has mysteriously befriended Emma's mother, Ella.

Weston (Jack Willis), the shiftless paterfamilias of the Tate clan, comes home drunk, reeking, and angry, while his daughter, Emma, tries to engage him in conversation.

While Weston (Jack Willis, supine), having brought home only a bag of desert artichokes to feed his family, has passed out on the kitchen table, wife Ella (Pamela Reed) has opened up the refrigerator and hysterically tosses out its contents as son, Wesley (Jud Williford), stands by.

Eccentric barkeep Ellis (Rod Gnapp, standing) comes by the Tate household to settle debts with Weston (Jack Willis), only to find him supine on the kitchen table.

Ella (Pamela Reed) frantically tries to awaken her unconscious husband, Weston (Jack Willis), in the face of catastrophe on the family farm.

Mother Ella (Pamela Reed) is taken unawares when, in the midst of other disasters, policeman Malcolm (Craig Marker) delivers the news that her daughter is in custody.

Clean and sobered up, Weston (Jack Willis) passionately recounts his encounter with an eagle to a sick but living lamb.

Father Weston looks on in disgust as son, Wesley (Jud Williford, seated), wearing Weston's own filthy clothing and covered in the blood of slaughtered livestock, feeds like an animal on the kitchen floor.

Emma (Nicole Lowrance, right) tries desperately to convey the gravity of their situation to her increasingly crazed brother, Wesley (Jud Williford, center), as mother Ella (Pamela Reed) remains unconscious on the kitchen table.

Just when things couldn't get any worse, thugs Emerson (T. Edward Webster, left) and Slater (Howard Swain, right) pay a fateful visit, leaving Wesley (Jud Williford, center) frantic.
