Raynor Sheine (standing) portrays Rutherford Selig, an itinerant merchant, who has arrived at Aunt Ester's house bearing rocks for the wall that the gatekeeper Eli (Chuck Patterson) is building on the property.

Aunt Ester (Michele Shay) introduces Citizen (Owiso Odera, right) to Solly Two Kings (Steven Anthony Jones), a recently freed slave making his home at Aunt Ester's house.

Inside Aunt Ester's home—a haven for lost souls seeking redemption—Ester (Michelle Shay) tells the newly arrived and sleeping Citizen (Owiso Odera) that he has begun an adventure that he doesn't even know about.

Caesar (Gregory Wallace)—a local constable—warns Citizen to stay out of trouble or else suffer his wrath.

Caesar (Gregory Wallace, center) explains to Aunt Ester's maid, Black Mary (Roslyn Ruff) and Solly (Steven Anthony Jones) how he became the man he is, trying to enforce order at all costs, even though he is widely despised for acting more white than black.

Having reported of a riot at the local mill, Solly (Steven Anthony Jones, right) learns from Eli (Chuck Patterson, center) that they have a new man to lend a hand in Citizen (Owiso Odera, right).

Michele Shay portrays the 285-year-old Aunt Ester, whose home is a haven for lost souls and those in need of redemption.

Citizen (Owiso Odera) longs for Black Mary (Roslyn Ruff), who is wary of becoming close to another man who may ultimately slip through her hands.
