After she sends her niece Lydia Languish to her room for falling for the poor Ensign Beverly (who is actually Captain Jack Absolute, in disguise), Mrs. Malaprop (Jill Tanner) insists to an agreeable Sir Anthony Absolute (Charles Dean) that severity is the best way to treat a child.

Bob Acres (Dan Hiatt, left), a country bumpkin and one of Lydia's spurned suitors, brags to Jack (Anthony Fusco, right) and Jack's friend Faulkland (Gregory Wallace) that he shall win Lydia back from Ensign Beverly.

Sir Anthony (Charles Dean) informs his son Jack (Anthony Fusco) that he will be given a sizable estate, but only if he agrees to an arranged marriage.

Lucius (Andy Murray) convinces Bob Acres (Dan Hiatt) to write a letter to Ensign Beverly proposing a duel for the hand of Lydia.

The Irish gentleman Sir Lucius O'Trigger (Andy Murray) accepts a love letter delivered by Lydia's maid Lucy (Claire Brownell), as Jack's servant Fag (T. Edward Webster) spies on the interchange. Lucius mistakenly believes the letter is from Lydia, when in fact it is from Mrs. Malaprop.

Lydia (René Augesen, seated) infuriates her aunt, Mrs. Malaprop (Jill Tanner) by continuing to profess her love for Beverly, in plain hearing of Sir Anthony Absolute (Charles Dean, far left) and Jack Absolute (Anthony Fusco)—who pretends not to be jealous of his other self.

Following the fate of the duel, the couples reunite: Lydia and Jack (René Augesen and Anthony Fusco) and Faulkland and Julia (Gregory Wallace and Stacy Ross).

Lydia's friend Julia (Stacy Ross) tries to calm the paranoid Faulkland (Gregory Wallace) that she is true to him, despite his doubting remarks and repeated fits of jealousy.
