American Conservatory Theater

American Conservatory Theater

Reserve Your Place in San Francisco Theatrical History

The grand opening of the Columbia Theatre in 1910 represented a huge step forward in San Francisco's recovery from the 1906 earthquake. Dubbed a "splendid temple of drama" by the local press of the day, its stage was graced by the performances of such notables as Sarah Bernhardt, Clark Gable, Marlene Dietrich, Boris Karloff, and Mae West. More recent luminaries that have performed on this historic stage include Edith Piaf, Sammy Davis, Jr., Annette Bening, Olympia Dukakis, and Jean Stapleton. In September 2006 the theater was renamed the American Conservatory Theaterin honor of A.C.T.'s 40th anniversary in San Francisco.

This architecturally striking historical monument is now available for performances, special events, receptions, meetings, and product introductions. The full resources of this unique classic space can be employed for spectacular presentations. The graciously appointed American Conservatory Theater lounges lend themselves to grand parties, while the more intimate guest areas are available for private use.

This state-of-the-art venue can accommodate theatrical presentations, lectures, meetings, screenings, product introductions, and grand receptions.

Theater Lounges

In addition to the auditorium itself, the American Conservatory Theater hosts three meeting and lounge areas available during theatrical presentations and offered for rent separately for special events and corporate functions.

Fred's Columbia Room
This 1,346-square-foot lounge is named for A.C.T.'s beloved doorman, Fred Geick, who greeted patrons for more than 30 years with a cheerful "Hello, doctor" or "Good evening, baroness." Fred's Columbia Room is located downstairs from the theater's main lobby, and it features a full bar with table seating that can be configured for the occasion. The official occupancy level is 228.

The Garret Room
On the top floor of the theater is the Garret Room—a charming, private space for dinner parties, cocktail receptions, and meetings. The Garret can host up to 110 guests for a standing event, or a sit-down dinner for 60, within its 968 square feet.

The Sky Lobby
The newly renovated American Conservatory Theater features a stunning lounge located between the two balconies, overlooking Geary Street. The Sky Lobby is the perfect place to mingle at a cocktail party or reception. Tables may be added for serving hors d'oeuvres. The Sky Lobby is 995 square feet with an occupancy level of 135.
