Volunteer at A.C.T.
Friends of A.C.T. is the liaison office between A.C.T. staff and volunteers. The office recruits new volunteers, maintains volunteer records, coordinates volunteers for large projects, and writes and edits the volunteer newsletter.
A.C.T. offers a wide variety of opportunities to volunteer in many departments. You may choose to volunteer a set number of hours weekly, or on a project-by-project basis. Volunteers may work in one department regularly, or in a variety of areas. The choice is yours!

Volunteers may serve in any of the following departments:
Front of House
During performances, the front-of-house staff manages the theater. Volunteers usher and distribute programs for performances. Volunteers also are needed to assist with front-of-house events, to make volunteer usher phone calls, and to provide clerical support. Volunteer ushering also gives you the opportunity to see performances at A.C.T. for free! If you are interested in being a volunteer usher, please call 415.439.2349.
Development Department
The development department oversees fundraising events and solicits and processes government, foundation, corporate, and individual contributions. Volunteers provide such clerical support as collating and stuffing envelopes, filing, updating donor data files, and assisting at fundraising events.
Young Conservatory
More than 700 students aged eight to nineteen are enrolled annually in the Young Conservatory. Volunteers provide such clerical support as typing I.D. cards, generating class lists on a computer, photocopying scripts, and stuffing envelopes for special mailings.
Library
The A.C.T. library contains more than 8,500 plays, periodicals, and theater-related publications. Volunteer duties include checking out and shelving books, updating the card catalog, answering student inquiries, and collecting fines.
Marketing Department
The marketing department is responsible for the generation of earned income from single-ticket and subscription sales. It creates the theater's brochures, oversees all advertising campaigns, and organizes various promotional events. Weekly and single-project assignments are available. Volunteers are needed for typing and word processing, photocopying, stuffing envelopes for large mailings, and distributing brochures and flyers. Volunteers should have strong telephone skills and enjoy working autonomously.
Human Resources
Volunteers assist the human resources director with such duties as drafting correspondence, word processing, photocopying, and telephoning. Volunteers interested in this position should like to work independently, be detail-oriented, and be willing to commit to a weekly schedule.
Subscriptions
This department processes and mails all A.C.T. subscriptions. Volunteers are needed in August and September to collate and stuff more than 10,000 subscription packets.
Public Relations
The P.R. department issues press releases to the news media on the theater's activities and organizes press openings and other media events. Volunteers maintain press clippings, photocopy press releases and reviews, and help compile press kits.
Artistic
Volunteers assist the artistic staff with such duties as driving artists to and from the airport, phoning members of the board of trustees, filing actor resumes, photocopying scripts, scheduling audition appointments, proofreading, and assisting in auditions. Weekly or single-project assignments are available. Volunteers interested in working in this department should be outgoing, sociable, and have a good phone manner.
Publications
This department is responsible for creating the theater's programs and publishes Words on Plays (A.C.T.'s in-depth performance guides), as well as other periodicals. Volunteers may assist the publications editor with the research and writing of articles, word processing, and filing. Volunteers interested in working in publications should have good writing and research skills.
