Today’s college drama field is extremely competitive, saturated with many different options open to young adults looking to continue their journey as artists. High school counselors often are at a loss as to how to advise students interested in arts training beyond high school. Where can a young person go to find answers and help in preparing for the next step?
For more than 20 years, the A.C.T. Young Conservatory has provided guidance navigating the difficult journey of finding and applying/auditioning for college and/or conservatory acting and musical theater training. An impressive list of YC graduates in all of the top programs make our A.C.T. students the best-qualified and most-sought-after for admission.
A.C.T.’s College Prep course helps young people sort through the abundant possibilities, clarifies those that best suit each student, and prepares them for the rigors of the audition and admission process. A.C.T. College Prep 2019, offered in two parts, follows the timeline for upcoming applications and auditions for schools throughout the country.
“I would highly recommend it to any performing arts student looking for guidance. It gave me a community of other students going through the same process...and information spanning from how to ace an audition all the way to the semantics of a BFA vs. an MFA...The active audition workshop in addition to an overall education of the application itself was a powerhouse combination that left me very prepared.”

Summer 2019 / Early Fall 2019
Grades: 11 & 12
College Prep: Part One helps high school juniors and seniors navigate the complicated and often intimidating process of applying to a competitive college theater program. Led by Young Conservatory Director Jill MacLean, along with special guest teachers and students who have recently been through the process, this course clarifies the admissions and audition process requirements and discusses the Common Application and how to maximize efficiency. Students will narrow down their top program choices, share résumé and headshots for review, and narrow down their audition material—a key component in successfully showing at auditions—in a supportive environment. This year we are offering two different opportunities to take the Part One course: a one-week intensive in July or sessions on four consecutive Friday evenings in September and October. *Please note: this is the same curriculum. You only need to participate in one of the offerings to qualify for Part Two.
Session 1: Mon–Fri, July 22–26, 10 a.m.–12 p.m.
Session 2: Fridays, Sep 20–Oct 11, 4–6:30 p.m.
Fall 2019 / Winter 2020
Grade: 12 only
Preparation and rehearsal of material is crucial to succeeding in the world of competitive auditions. College Prep: Part Two focuses on audition preparation and technique in three private coaching sessions with senior A.C.T. artistic faculty, a meeting with the YC Director, and a mock audition and interview with a panel of artistic professionals. College Prep: Part Two will give students the skills, accountability, and opportunity to finesse their final selection of repertoire, and to audition and run their material (both musical and/or straight plays) with professionals so they can feel that confident when they enter the audition room.
College Prep: Part One is highly recommended as a prerequisite to Part Two.
