Junior Classes

Schedule: 10 Tuesdays: Sept 8, 15, 22, 29, Oct 6, 13, 20, 27, Nov 3 & 10 from 4:30–6 p.m. at 30 Grant Ave
Tuition: $345

This foundational class is designed to let the students’ imaginations run wild while exploring a variety of approaches to enhance the physical life of a character. Expect lots of physical and imaginative play inspired by mime, clowning, masks, and physical improvisation that help young actors develop a playful spirit and freedom on stage. Classes will meet once a week for 10 weeks. Students will have 90 minutes of training per week in-person at our 30 Grant Ave Studios in San Francisco. Students are expected to attend all sessions and may expect to spend a little prep or rehearsal time outside of class for the best experience. This course will culminate in a group showing “open class” for friends and family during the final hour of the final day (November 10) to present material rehearsed in class.

JR Acting: Improvisation & Physical Character is for you if:

• You’ve taken some acting before and want to want to explore more physical theater and/or
• You want to develop your courage and flexibility onstage and off and/or
• You’d like to discover/uncover your comedic instincts and laugh a lot

This Fall, join us as we bring back the combination acting-musical theater curriculum that allows curious actors-in-training to experience it all!  We encourage young actors to explore both acting and musical theater as tools to tell a story and learn fundamental theater vocabulary in a fun and supportive environment. Basic singing and movement skills are introduced through choreography, staging and song performance led by a lead teaching artist and recorded accompaniment. Students also learn about improvisation, physical character and the building blocks of preparing a monologue or scene, and how to use the actor’s body and face to help create character and tell a story. Classes will meet once a week for 10 weeks. Students will have 90 minutes of training per week in-person at our 30 Grant Ave Studios in San Francisco. Students are expected to attend all sessions and may expect to spend a little prep or rehearsal time outside of class for the best experience. This course will culminate in a group showing “open class” for friends and family during the final hour of the final day (November 11) to present material rehearsed in class.

JR Performance Exploration: Acting & Musical Theater is for you if:

• You’ve never studied acting or musical theater before and want a fun and easy-going opportunity to explore both and/or
• You’ve taken some acting or musical theater classes before and want to sharpen your skills and/or
• You enjoy BOTH musical theater and acting and want to meet like-minded friends!

Schedule: 10 Thursdays: Sept 10, 17, 24, Oct 1, 8, 15, 22, 29, Nov 5 & 12 from 4:30–6 p.m. at 30 Grant Ave
Tuition: $375

Interested in acting in film and television? Now’s your chance to get in front of the camera! Students of all levels of experience are welcome. Actors will explore:

• Fundamental acting tools including objective, obstacle, actions, tactics, and point of view
• Theatrical skills such as scene analysis, vocal production, and physical awareness
• On-camera acting techniques versus stage techniques
• Audition preparation and filming yourself
• The business and industry of film, television, and commercial acting

Classes will meet once a week for 10 weeks. Students will have 90 minutes of training per week in-person at our 30 Grant Ave Studios in San Francisco. There will be minimal assignments and memorization in-between classes.  This course will culminate in a group showing “open class” on the final hour of the final day (November 12) to present projects, videos, and scenes rehearsed in class.  Have fun with peers while gaining some valuable on-camera acting skills!

JR On-Camera Acting is for you if:

• You’d like to learn more about the film, television, and commercial acting industry and/or
• You’ve had experience in theater and are looking for a new acting medium

Times: Thursdays from 4:30–6 p.m. & Saturdays from 10 a.m.–12 p.m. at 30 Grant Ave

Once upon a time… with a twist! Designed for young performers with moderate to substantial acting experience who can bring a lot of focus, maturity and self-discipline into the rehearsal room, this 10-week project will culminate in 45-minute performance. Under the direction of YC faculty, students will write, design, and act in their own adaptations of classic fairytales. Specific roles will be cast based on the finalized scripts created by the students, and students will help design and create their own costume and prop pieces with guidance from YC faculty and production assistants. Classes will be held in-person at our 30 Grant Avenue Studios in San Francisco. Students will meet twice a week on Thursdays from 4:30-6pm and Saturdays from 10am-12pm, for a total of 3.5 hours a week. The culminating performance open to friends and family will be at our 30 Grant Ave studios on Saturday, November 14 at 11 a.m.

Students MUST be available for the dress rehearsal and performance on Thursday, November 12 and Saturday, November 14.  Please note that this course is NOT a drop-in class model, and families should make sure they are prepared to make attendance a priority.  If you have questions about whether this class is a good fit for your child, please email us at YoungConservatory@act-sf.org.

JR Project Class: Fairytale Mash Up is for you if:

• You have some experience with acting and are ready for a more advanced level, performance-oriented class and/or
• You’re eager to learn how to use your voice and movement to portray magical characters and/or
• You’re excited to both write and act in your own take on classic fairytales
• You’re ready to commit to a course which will ask you to do significant practice of material, both lines and blocking, outside of class time

Schedule: 10 Saturdays: Sept 12, 19, 26, Oct 3, 10, 17, 24, 31, Nov 7 & 14 from 1:30–3:30 p.m. at 30 Grant Ave
Tuition: $425

Gain confidence and expand your acting knowledge with JR Acting: The Actor’s Toolbox! This fundamental course for young actors is designed to give students foundational knowledge of acting principles as applied to improvisation, monologue, scene and/or original text work. Students of all levels of experience are welcome, and this class can be repeated. Classes will meet once a week for 10 weeks. Students will have 2 hours of training per week in-person at our 30 Grant Ave Studios in San Francisco. Students are expected to attend all sessions and may expect to spend a little prep or rehearsal time outside of class for the best experience. This course will culminate in a group showing “open class” for friends and family during the final hour of the final day (November 14) to present material rehearsed in class.

JR Acting: The Actor’s Toolbox is for you if:

• You’ve never studied acting before and want a fun and easy-going opportunity to explore it and/or
• You’ve taken some acting classes before and want to sharpen your skills and/or
• You’d like to meet new friends who share your excitement for theater!
