by Kate Hamill
Based on the novel by William Makepeace Thackeray
Directed by Jessica Stone
A coproduction with Shakespeare Theatre Company

April 17–May 12, 2019
A.C.T.’s Geary Theater

“A gift to actors and a goody bag for its audience”

The New York Times

“A masterpiece of creative compression that is at once arrestingly original and faithful to its source material”
The Wall Street Journal

From acclaimed playwright Kate Hamill (2017 Playwright of the Year, Wall Street Journal) comes a rollicking new stage adaptation of William Thackeray’s classic 19th-century novel that pops with 21st-century spirit.

Ambitious Becky Sharp may not have been born with wealth or status, but she’s determined to attain both—at any cost. Armed with fierce wit and calculating charm, Becky forges her own path through London’s high society, dealing herself into a game she was never invited to play.

A rock opera by the Kilbanes

produced by Z Space and piece by piece productions

Featuring Kate Kilbane and Dan Moses (The Kilbanes)
With Lila Blue, Julia Brothers, Dan Harris, and Joshua Pollock
Directed by Becca Wolff

April 30–May 12, 2019
A.C.T.’s Strand Theater

“The Kilbanes could fly endlessly into space on a single, hypnotically executed chord”
San Francisco Chronicle

“Spectacularly beautiful!”
Theater Dogs

“Well-crafted . . . a smart retelling”
The New York Times

Weightless weaves together myth with the Kilbanes’ celebrated indie rock sound to tell a story of sisterhood, love, betrayal, and rebirth. This Oakland-based, theatrical rock band is the musical experiment of Kate Kilbane and Dan Moses, a songwriting duo (who happen to be married). The Kilbanes have created a performance style that blends the raucous energy of a rock show with the mesmerizing storytelling found in raw, experimental theater.

The Kilbanes are currently under commission by A.C.T.’s Young Conservatory to create a new musical for young actors.

by Eugène Ionesco
Translated by Derek Prouse
Directed by Frank Galati

May 29–June 23, 2019
A.C.T.’s Geary Theater

“Roars with power and humor . . . fascinating . . . action-packed . . . timely”

Sarasota Herald-Tribune

“Sharp as ever! Ionesco’s seminal absurdist satire . . . about the fragility of civilized norms we take for granted”
Los Angeles Times

In the opening moments of Ionesco’s masterpiece of absurdist satire, a rhinoceros rampages through a village square.
At the local café, people argue over what they saw. Was it really a rhino, or just fake news?

As the eccentric villagers shed refined façades for hides and horns—smashing windows and crushing flowerbeds—rumpled everyman Berenger faces a desperate choice: take a stand against the armored brutes or join the mindless herd?

Hailed as “masterful . . . and downright hilarious,” this outrageous, comedic story of a civilized community shifting from defiance to compliance is chillingly resonant and riotously funny. From Tony Award–winning director Frank Galati (1776 at A.C.T.) comes an all-new adaptation of this wickedly entertaining comedy about power, conformism, and mass culture.
