Welcome to The Strand Theater

A dynamic and intimate performance complex filled with the creative energy of the most exciting artists of the Bay Area and beyond, The Strand had its much-anticipated opening in spring 2015.

Located directly across from Civic Center’s lively UN Plaza, The Strand boasts a 283-seat theater, a 120-seat event and performance space, and a welcoming lobby and cafe that is open to city residents seeking a new destination in the Central Market neighborhood.

The Strand allows A.C.T. the flexibility to stage an expanded range of productions each season, including specially commissioned new work, cabaret and theater performances by A.C.T.’s M.F.A. Program and Young Conservatory students, educational workshops with school partners, event rentals for community groups, and celebrations for the A.C.T. community.

Most significantly, The Strand allows A.C.T. to deepen its impact on the city and community through the transformative power of theater.

The Strand Theater is located steps away from the Civic Center BART station.

We acknowledge the land

As part of our commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion, we are in the process of building a meaningful, continual relationship with the local Indigenous theater community. As part of this we begin by honoring the lands upon which we do our work. We would be proud to offer deep gratitude to the tribal band of Ramaytush Ohlone peoples and their lands that cover Northern California and down the Pacific coastline. Prior to the arrival of the Spanish in the 1700s, the Ramaytush Ohlone numbered approximately 1500 persons, and made their life on the sacred lands. Due to the invasion and the establishment of Franciscan Missions throughout California, only a few families survived and still remain. Those descendants make up the membership of the Association of Ramaytush Ohlone (ARO) today. We honor the Ohlone as a people, their resilience, and all they have done and continue to do in maintaining sacred and ancestral lands, ceremony, and communities to this day.
